Miami QB Marve Ready for spring

Marve and two other teammates were injured shortly after midnight on July 16. Wide receiver Jermaine McKenzie was driving a 2007 Dodge Charger owned by Marve’s parents when he fell asleep about 110 miles from Miami’s campus and the car rolled several times. Marve, who led Tampa Plant to a state championship and 15-0 record in 2006 after throwing for 48 touchdowns and 4,380 yards, says the hand and wrist won’t hold him back when the quarterback competition begins. Also vying for the QB spot are highly touted freshman Jacory Harris, Cannon Smith and Taylor Cook. Huskies hire Donatell The Washington Huskies have chosen former NFL assistant Ed Donatell as their defensive coordinator. Donatell was given a two-year contract with an annual compensation package of $334,000. He replaces Kent Baer, who was fired. State to honor coach A University of Michigan gridiron legend might get his own official day in the state. A state House committee approved a bill that would designate the date of the University of Michigan’s first home football game each season Bo Schembechler Day. The bill now goes to the House floor. Schembechler coached the Wolverines from 1969 through 1989. His Michigan teams won 194 games. Schembechler died in 2006. Lamar funding approved Lamar students have approved a fee that would help fund the return of a football program dormant since 1989. Football would return in 2010 if the Texas State University System Board of Regents approves the plan at a meeting on Feb. 22. The Cardinals would return to the Southland Conference in Division I-AA. Tenuta to Notre Dame Jon Tenuta, defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech the past six seasons, joined Notre Dame’s staff as assistant head coach for defense. Tenuta will try to improve a unit that finished 39th in the nation in total defense in 2007. Recruiting update West Orange RB/FS Ryan Middleton (5-8/177) orally committed to Division I-AA Wagner College of New York. Middleton played at Osceola, Lake Highland and Edgewater before finishing at West Orange. He had 90 carries for 588 yards and four rushing touchdowns as a senior. He also had 54 tackles, one fumble recovery and two interceptions. . . . Timber Creek DB/QB Matt Meehan has committed to Jacksonville, to play for former UF QB Kerwin Bell.
