A Complete List Of Events Today In Litchfield County Greater Waterbury

Parade at 1 p.m. at the intersection of Flanders Road and Main Street. The procession will go up Main Street, also known as Route 61, and end at the Town Green across from Memorial Hall.

Selectman Thomas O’Neil will be master of ceremonies and resident Polly Kacerguis will narrate the poem “In Flanders Fields.” Rev. Joseph E. Looney of Church of the Nativity will conduct a short prayer.

CANAAN: Parade leaves Town Hall at 10:30 a.m. and ends at the Doughboy war memorial. Ceremony at 11 a.m. Wade Gailes will be the parade’s grand marshal. Gailes, son of Selectman Thomas Gailes, is a master sergeant in the U.S. Army and has served in Afghanistan. After the ceremony, the audience is invited to visit the museum at the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post on Route 7.

CORNWALL: Observances at 9 a.m. with a service at the North Cornwall Cemetery. Residents should bring flowers to decorate graves. At 10 a.m., there will be a seamen’s service at the covered bridge. Parade and ceremony at 11 a.m. Afterward, there will be food and games at the United Church of Christ.

FALLS VILLAGE: Parade forms at Lee H. Kellogg at 9:30 a.m., proceeds down Main Street to the town green, ceremony there at 10. Refreshments will be served afterward.

HARWINTON: Parade Monday at 2 p.m., from Harwinton Fairgrounds to the Green. The parade route runs from Locust Road, west on Bull Road, north on South Road, and ends at the green at Route 4. Ceremony afterward.

KENT: Parade will step off at 9 a.m. from Kent Center School, and proceed down Route 341 to St. Andrew’s Cemetery, entering through the west gate. After ceremonies, parade will then reform and turn left down Route 341, with a stop at the Civil War Monument where a Kent Center School student will recite the Gettysburg Address. After another volley from the firing squad, the parade will continue north to Kent Memorial Library for additional services. The parade will then reform and march to Kent Congregational Cemetery for a final ceremony. A reception follows, with refreshments provided by American Legion Hall-Jennings Post No. 153 and the Kent Lions Club. A bus will be available to transport people back to Kent Center School. In the event of rain, the parade will be canceled with ceremonies held at Kent Center School.

LITCHFIELD: Parade at 10 a.m. starting at North and Prospect street. Ceremony follows on the Green. In case of rain, a ceremony will be held at Litchfield Intermediate School.

MORRIS: The American Legion will hold memorial services at East Morris Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. and Lakeside Cemetery at 10:30. The Eldridge Senior Center will hold a service at 11. Parade at 12:15 p.m., ceremony will follow in Memorial Park. Parade marshal is Jason Morton of Morris.

NAUGATUCK: Parade Monday, 9:15 a.m., rain or shine, from North Main Street in the Union City section and makes its way to the town Green where a brief ceremony is held. The parade will be led by World War II veteran and former Prisoner of War Nicholas Rahal, who lives in the Oakville section of Watertown. Marchers are asked to meet on North Main Street at 8:45 a.m.

NEW HARTFORD: First Selectman Earl R. MacInnes will be the featured speaker at a ceremony at Chapin Park in Pine Meadow at 10 a.m.

NEW MILFORD: First parade 8 a.m. starting at Firemen’s Field in Gaylordsville to Charlie Jones Memorial Park, where a brief ceremony will follow. Second parade and ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. in front of the New Milford Public Library. The parade will begin in front of the library, travel Down East Main Street, turn onto Bridge Street, follow Railroad Street north to Bennitt Street and complete its course at the War Memorial by way of West Main Street.

Several veterans and spectators will then proceed to Veteran’s Bridge in order to honor our Navy Veteran’s with an honor wreath to be tossed from the bridge into the Housatonic River.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremonies will take pace at the Veterans of Foreign Wars office at 11 Avery Road.

PROSPECT: Parade Monday, 1 p.m. from town Green and makes its way to Union City Road and into the Prospect Cemetery for a brief ceremony. Carnations will be laid on the graves of all U.S. veterans who died since last Memorial Day. Anyone who wants to be in the parade should meet at the Green at 12:15 p.m. and speak with Mayor Robert J. Chatfield.

PLYMOUTH: Parade at 10:30 a.m., starting at the Terryville fire house on Harwinton Avenue and proceeding to Veterans Memorial in Baldwin Park.

OXFORD: Parade Monday, 11 a.m. from entrance of the Little River Shopping Center and Oxford Road north on Route 67 to Town Hall. A service will follow at noon at Town Hall to present a plaque dedicated to service men and women who served their country during the Vietnam War and to hear from winners of a local poetry contest.

THOMASTON: The H.S. Liederkranz Society will sing at local cemeteries at 7 a.m. At 8:45 a.m., American Legion Post 22 will lay a wreath at Reeves’ Little League Field in honor of Thomas Reeves, a local man killed in action at Pearl Harbor and recipient of the Medal of Honor. The group will then proceed to St. Thomas Cemetery to honor deceased veterans buried there, then on to Seth Thomas Park to lay a wreath to honor Revolutionary War veterans and then to the fire station for another ceremony. Parade at 10 led by Honorary Parade Marshal Armand V. DeFiore. The parade will proceed from Center School to Main Street to Center Street and on to Hillside Cemetery for ceremonies honoring the naval dead. At the cemetery, Miss Columbia, high school senior Courtney Hurlbert, will be rowed around the pond by Robert Norton, a U.S. Navy veteran.

The parade will then reform and continue on to Veterans Memorial Park by way of Meadow, Elm and East Main streets. If it rains, the ceremonies will be held in the Center School auditorium.

SALISBURY: Parade at 9:45 a.m. with a salute over the water to those fallen at sea on the bridge near the Scoville Memorial Library. The parade continues to Salisbury Cemetery. Ceremony follows.

SHARON: Parade forms at 9:30 a.m. at Sharon Center School and Auto Sport Garage. Kicks off at 10, down Main Street to Veterans Memorial. All organizations are welcome to march and antique vehicles are welcome. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated girls’ and boys’ bikes. Speaker is Retired Marine Col. Donald Welsh. In case of rain, the ceremonies will be held inside the auditorium at the Sharon Center School. Anyone with questions can call (860) 364-5814.

SOUTHBURY: Parade Monday, 11 a.m. on Depot Hill Road, west on Main Street South to Memorial Park between Town Hall and the Senior Center. A brief ceremony will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the war monuments in the park. Mary Korsu will be the guest speaker.

After the parade there will be a family picnic at noon at Settlers Park on Crook Horn Road featuring food, music and activities for all ages throughout the afternoon. People are invited to bring their own picnics.

TORRINGTON: Parade at 9:30 a.m. starts just south of Coe Park on Main Street, then to North Elm, Prospect and Water streets and back to Coe Park. Local radio station WAPJ 89.9 FM, will broadcast and announce the parade participants as they pass the reviewing stand. Ceremonies to follow, or at 10 if rain cancels the parade.

Honorary parade marshals include Josephine Hinman World War II U.S. Army nurse and Leonard Cables, World War II U.S. Army soldier, both from Torrington. Joseph J. “Lefty” Silano, who also served in the Army in World War II and who died April 19, will be recognized as an honorary marshal posthumously.

WASHINGTON: Prayer, roll call, color guard and firing squad at noon at Washington Green Cemetery. Parade forms at 1:15 p.m. at New Preston Congregational Church and steps off at 1:30 p.m. through the village to Baldwin Hill Cemetery. A second parade forms at 2:15 p.m. at Washington Primary School, and steps off at 2:30 p.m., stopping at Depot Bridge and proceeding to Bryan Memorial Town Hall for services.

WATERTOWN: Parade at 10 a.m. at Watertown Plaza on Route 63 and proceed south on Main Street to the Oakville Green and veterans’ memorial, where ceremonies will be held. The Watertown Oakville Veterans’ Council invites all veterans back to the post after the parade for food and refreshments.

WINSTED: Parade forms on Division and Meadow streets at 11 a.m. World War II Navy veteran Robert McCarthy of VFW Post 296, who served in the Pacific theater, will serve as grand marshal. Ceremony after at the town athletic fields.
